Tips For Staying Focused

I don't know about you, but at times (There's an understatement) I have trouble with staying focused and on track for whatever task I am doing at the time. The cause could be any number of things, that are going on either in my own life or around me. So what can I do to stay focused.

Well, a lot of well meaning people, have offered their advice to me on this topic, ranging from locking myself away and having no distractions around me, to exercising and meditating before I attempt to do, what it is, I need to do.


However well intended the advice, I have found that this advice, may not always be practical. I can't imagine myself meditating while I'm driving down the road for example, or exercising whilst I am at work at my desk, so what do I do to stay focused.

Well for me staying focused is a 3 step process

I make a decision, I prioritise, and I do it for me.

By that I mean, I make a decision that something has to be done, it doesn't matter what it is or if it is big or small or long or short I just know that whatever it is, it has to be done, so I make a decision to do it. That is my first step.

The second step is that I prioritise it, I give it a level of importance, The higher the level of importance the quicker I find myself doing whatever it is that needs doing. However I make that level of importance without any desperation. I have found that it is very hard for me to do something if I pressure myself to do it, rather than choose to do it, so I give it a level of importance that doesn't have me under pressure, yet is still achievable for me.

Then I do it for me. What do I mean by that? I mean that I do it for me, not because someone else says I have to, or because I have a deadline to meet or because I have my future riding on it; I find that all of those reasons and reasons like those mentioned place far too much pressure on me and I do not do my best work. Whereas if I choose to do something for myself, I tend to do it in a calm and efficient manner. I do it at a pace that I am comfortable with, and in a place that is of my choosing.

By doing it for me, I also seem to somehow claim responsibility for it, which helps me a lot, especially if it is something that also affects my family members or other people, and by claiming this responsibility I take extra care and effort in doing the task at hand, which then gives a better all round result.

Now other things a person can do to stay focused are things like:

   1. Break a complex task up into the smallest possible activities and do the easiest first, Then the 2nd, the 3rd and so on.

   2. Keep your work space clutter-free so your current focus isn't distracted by the chaos around you

   3. Work on one task/activity at a time, you can use a kitchen timer to maintain pace, say an hour at a time then 10 minutes off then another hour and 10 min off etc

   4. Listen to background music through headphones, this keeps you in your seat and your spirits and energy up

   5. Stay organized and know everything that you need to get done, then when it comes down to it; focus on one thing at a time and FINISH IT

   6. Remember your successes and how far you have come from the life/Job you once had.

   7. Put a sticker saying "One Thing At A Time" on your Pc or laptop.

   8. Do the thing you dread the most first, once it's done the rest seems like a piece of cake

   9. If you start to feel tired, Go for a walk for 15-30 minutes

  10. Sit Back and visualise the end of your task and the success it will bring you

Staying focused isn't hard, if you don't over complicate things, or put yourself under pressure. Use these tips and you will have no problem with staying focused on whatever you choose to do.

How well your blog does in terms of money, or reach is very much a factor of three things. How much traffic you get. How much traffic you get back. And how frequently you are adding content.

There are a number of ways to get traffic. They all involve either time and energy or money. Search engine traffic is one of the cheapest methods in some ways. How much traffic you get back depends on the quality and frequency of your content, both in your blog and your email marketing. If you use content marketing -- in other words, video, podcast or article marketing -- how much traffic you get depends on the frequency and quality of your content.

There are only two ways to get repeat traffic. One is to create content and then exchange it for an email address. Then create content to keep people reading your emails. At the same time, you need to create content to give your subscribers a reason to visit. The second way is to create enough high quality content that your reader wants to check your blog regularly so they don't miss the content.

So what's the problem?

Well, if you've done any blogging or article writing, you know that creating high quality content is a very time consuming task. And within a very short period of time, they'll become overwhelmed. The problem is that they've forgotten that they really need to produce six different types of content. You will also need to produce the occasional personality piece. This content keeps your reader connecting with you as a person. However, unfortunately, it isn't enough to keep your readers returning so you need to consider it as extra content.

You will need to produce high quality content for traffic purposes. Your hope is that this content will be repeated by people who publish content produced by others.

You will need to produce alternative content for traffic. This is primarily a recasting of the high quality content in different media for example videos, podcasts or email. While this won't take as long as producing the original content, it does take time.

You may also need to produce very high quality learning content. This is content you will be using for eBooks, books, videos, audios and live courses. Strictly speaking, you do not need to produce this type of content. However, if you are hoping to make a living from your blog you will need content to sell.

Finally you will need to produce traffic-quality content. This is generally low to medium quality content produced for the sole purposes of generating content. Typically, this is outsourced as soon as you can afford to do so. Unfortunately, this content will require editing to prevent it becoming very low or sub-par content that will do more damage than good. All of which takes time and money.

Tips On Making Blog Comments

What is, or should be, the purpose of making comments on a blog post? Where should it be posted? What should it say? These are questions that some have and others should ask themselves before commenting on a blog or blog post. Opinions vary between bloggers as to the value of receiving comments. But a disturbing trend in comments received has made it increasingly difficult on the blogging community.



In the months since I started writing my personal blog, I have received over 14,000 comments. Over the past several months the quality of the comments on my blog, and the value they add to the readers experience, has declined to the point that it is no longer an asset to the readers. Don't get me wrong, I love receiving a well thought out comment about a specific article, telling me why they agree, or disagree, and adding their thoughts and opinions on the topic of that article. A general complement on the quality and tone of the blog is also welcome, but is best placed on the testimonial page rather than on a particular article.

First- Where should a comment be placed. If the blogger wants comments, they will usually say so at the end of the post, and a place will be provided for your comment. That is where you should put it, after the article that you are commenting on. Some blogs, have a page titled "Testimonial". Although this page is usually intended for testimonials from friends and associates, to be put there by the owner of the blog, many people put their comments on this page. That would be acceptable for a general comment on the blog site, but not for a comment on a specific article. Or at the very least if commenting on the "Testimonial" page about a specific article, it should say in the comment which article it is referring to. Placing the comment anywhere but on the article removes it from the flow of comments for others to read and, if they wish to, comment on.Second-What is the purpose of making comments? If you were a blogger which of these comments would you prefer?

"Dude, awesome post. Check my blog at my.wordpress.com"

or

"I appreciated your article and understand what you mean when you said___, and am glad others think the way I do. But I would also add that ____and____! Thanks for your candor on ____."

I think you will agree that the second comment is preferable because it was written to expand on the ideas presented in the original post, and to create a relationship between the blogger and the reader, while the first was written only for the purpose of self promotion.

The following five tips will help you when commenting on a blog.

Be Specific. Place your comment on the article and personalize it so the blogger will know that you actually read it and why you felt compelled to comment on it. The purpose of making comments on a blog post is to forge a relationship between the blogger and their readers. It allows the reader to join the "conversation" by saying what they liked about the article, and why they agree or disagree.

Don't include a link to your blog in the comment. When you leave a comment your name and website will automatically link to your blog so there is no need to include it again. Obvious self promotion of you or your website will almost always be ignored and deleted. Don't tarnish your reputation by being considered a spammer.

Stay on topic. Keep your comment on the topic of the article and don't digress into other areas or topics. It's ok to share a link to a third-party source if you think it is relevant to the article, but be sure to explain how it relates to the article.

Be polite. Rude comments and profanity do not add value to any discussion and divert attention from the bloggers article. If you disagree with the writer, it is perfectly acceptable to offer your opinion, but do so in a polite manner. If you are a blogger and you receive disrespectful or derogatory comments, always delete them. Don't waste your time by acknowledging them.

Keep it short. A brief, concise comment is easier for the blogger or others to read and respond to. A few sentences should be sufficient to convey your message. If you have strong feelings about a topic and wish to make a longer comment, you should do that on the contact page. Most blogs will have one. There you may enter your contact information and your comment. The blogger may then respond to you by email if they wish to carry on the discussion further.

Third.The biggest problem facing bloggers today is the increasing amount of spam they receive. This spam can consist of everything from a simple comment which includes a link to their website or business, comments that have absolutely no relationship to the blog or article, to huge gibberish messages generated solely for the purpose of testing spam filters. Why someone would take the time to write a comment that has nothing to do with the article is beyond me.

Another comment that can be considered spam is one written by someone who attempts to use large sophisticated sounding words that don't fit the context, or have such a poor command of the English language that their comment makes no sense at all. Yet another type is the "copied" comment where a person uses another one of their comments over and over, or worse repeats someone elses comment, almost word for word. If you wish to put your name out there for all to see, you should first make sure that others can read and understand the message, and that it is your original comment.

The spider algorithms have selected for extinction the ad-crowded, copy-cat sites. The sites that survive are those that adapt to new conditions. Fact-gathering and compiled information that is surrounded by ad-shrubbery is out. Link and ad aggregation is out.

It's time to adapt to the new scenery. It's time to breathe life and personality into your articles and tell an interesting anecdote, or create a lively, original analogy. Robust activity and responsive, interactive traffic is in. The truth is that, in today's climate, your site would be better off being the scene of an accident than being a lifeless collection of links and ads.

That is the new reality, the new conditions you are working under. A small number of first-page sites have survived and are making their way through this narrow bottleneck. And that's okay. Out of this bottleneck is coming new growth, a new species of blogs and sites that offer original and creative content. The Internet itself will be better off in the long run. Bloggers and designers will be better off in the long run. So adapt, or die off. That is the harsh evolutionary reality.

New traffic is important because of the high loss rates with the internet. The sad reality is that unless your reader bookmarks your site or opts into your mailing list, it is very unlikely they will be able to find your site again. You'll lose them. Even if they do bookmark your site, chances are they won't bother to return. Even when they pay for the service, chances are they won't return very often.

Traffic levels are also important if you sell advertising on your site. Some methods pay for the number of impressions. Unless your site (and the ad) is seen, you won't earn anything. While it does change from week to week, this percentage does tend to vary within limits over a period of time. So if you are being paid by the click, you need to have a high level of traffic to get sufficient clicks.

If you are receiving payment based on commission, the situation is even worse. Not only do you get clicks proportional to the traffic, but you'll make sales in proportion to the number of clicks you receive. Let's say, you have a click through rate of 10%. In order to make 100 sales in a month, you'll need 1000 clicks. But to make 1000 clicks you'll need 10,000 visitors in a month.

Of course, not all traffic is equal. In fact, too much of the wrong type of traffic can sink your site. Most sites have some level of limitation on the amount of traffic they can have before you begin being charged extra. If you are receiving too much untargeted traffic, your advertising and other sales will not be enough to justify the extra costs. On the other hand, targeted traffic -- that is visitors who are ready to buy a product like yours -- will increase your advertising and other sales.

There is an almost infinite number of ways to promote your blog, but today there are on two that I want to talk about. You see, some methods of blog promotion methods work better than others, some are easy and some require more skill.

For the sake of this article I will only be discussing 1 method of blog promotion. This method is simple and automatic, even for a total beginner. Yet at the same time it is powerful enough to be used by many of the top bloggers in our industry.

Of course I am talking about the blog community.

There are many different kinds of blog communities out there. And they vary in degrees of effectiveness. The free communities, like those found on Facebook and in message forums can be very powerful and effective. However, more often than not, they tend to be very loose because they are largely un-regulated and un-moderated. They tend to be open to the public which unfortunately allows a massive influx of spam.

This is why paid blog communities hold so much more power. They are tightly moderated, effectively extinguishing any spam that might happen to sneak it's way in. These communities are a way for you to rub elbows with many of the big league players, and allows you a chance to network, make friends and build alliances.

Not only does your blog get promoted within the community, but also throughout the circles and networks of the other members.

See these communities are tight nit groups of people just like you and me, who have the same goal. These members will read, comment on and promote each others work both within the community, and without, to their entire social networks.

This is the power of leverage.

Blogging shouldn't be a solo activity. In fact if you want to find any measure of success, short term or long, it can't be. You need the support of other bloggers, just like they need your support. Remember, a rising tide floats all boats.
